On this page I am going to describe the Siberian Husky. The Siberian Husky is a medium sized working dog capable of amazing speed, abnormal strength, and great endurance. Sibes have a strong body build, moderate bone structure and firm well developed muscles. They move quick and light on their feet with great agility and grace. They can leap a four foot fence, make sharp turns, dodge, and stop and go in a moments notice. Their appearance and movement make them resemble a wolf, but that is only one of the few similaritites between the two.
The male Siberian Husky measures 21-23 inches at the withers and the females are 20-22 inches at the withers. Male dogs should weigh about 45-60 lbs and females weighing around 35-50 lbs. They have a double coat with the outer coat having longer, harsh and thick hair that is protection from cold and wind and doesn't let water penetrate to their skin. The shorter coat layer near the skin is soft and downy and keeps in the body's warmth. This breed is known to shed a lot, so if you have any aversions to dog hair, this may not be the breed for you! Due to the double coat, this breed is capable of withstanding temperatures as low as -55 to -70 degrees Farenheit. They have hair between their toes for grip on ice and snow. The Siberian Husky is a very clean and meticulous breed with rarely a doggy odor. They will quite often lick themselves to stay clean so it is imperative to NOT use ice melting chemicals or to USE mutluks (booties) on their feet in the winter. The constant cleanliness can make it hard to tell when the females of this breed come in heat, so you need to pay closer attention for that. They come in pure white, pure black and combination of red, sable, black, gray and white. The many colors of the Siberian can be seen at a web site listed on the Resources page.
The nature of this breed is sweet, fun-loving, energetic, and some what Clown-like. For this reason, they do NOT make good guard dogs. They tend to love and trust everyone, so they probably will show a burglar the items and help carry them out! The breed has also obtained the nickname of the "Houdini" of the dog world! Their high intelligence combined with the natural tendency to run and wander makes them EXPERTS at escaping from fenced yards and the house if the opportunity arises. They will chew, wiggle, climb, leap, dig under, and break thru glass to escape. It is advised:
(1) To child proof your house with door or window guards
(2) Supervise them in fenced yards and have a concrete block row at ground level of fence
(3) Use a martingale semi-choke color on them that they can NOT get out of
(4) Use a crate when you are not with them, have doors open they can get out, asleep, or not at home
(5) Take them to obedience training as a puppy
(6) Stay 2 steps ahead of the way they think.
Another characteristic of this breed is to re-decorate the yard. They love to dig holes or re-arrange and even eat flowers in your yard. So if a showy yard is your idea- this may not be your breed! On the Resources page you will find a link to the ASPCA web site that has lists of Toxic and Non-toxic plants for your pet's safety.
The Siberian Husky is a very intelligent but Stubborn breed, so training your dog will require patience, consistency, and positive praise for tasks done right. They do like to please their owners and can be very sensitive to scolding. You have to be firm with these dogs to set that YOU are leader of the pack.
Breed Description
Midnight Moon (Bertie's 2006 litter) is practicing her leaping techniques.
Midnight (2006 litter) practicing her digging. She is only 3 months old so you can imagine the hole she'll be able to dig later with months of practice.
Sibes do like to "Garden" in their own way. They are fond of eating the plants, vegetables or flowers. Midnight (2006 litter) seems to just be carving her pumpkin and playing "Peek-A-Boo" in this plant .
Chilli (Bertie's 2005 litter) is so smart- he thinks he can drive. Why run off on foot when he can take dad's wheels!
Storm (2006 litter) with the thing that all Sibe pups love the best- DIRT to play in.
That was FUN! Storm asks- What's next?
Sibes do like to be helpful- Storm (2006 litter) is going to HELP do the dishes.
This is what's next. As a Sibe pup owner, you will be used to doing this- a Lot!
Baby learning to howl while Frank holds it. Our puppies learn to be handeled very young.
